." very exciting times. i appreciate it. >>> ahead, the super sad true love story of congressman paul ryan's day planner. and whether it includes him serving as vice president of the united states. this is a very weird story. i don't know why more people aren't on it. >>> okay. colorado, colorado, colorado, colorado, colorado. of the last five polls of colorado, three of them show president obama leading. two of them show mitt romney leading. the website realclearpolitics does an average of all the polling on colorado, and their average right now has president obama up in colorado by 0.6%. 0.6%. which means that the race for president in colorado is a tie right now. this is a person whose job it is to oversee elections in colorado. guy at the podium there. he is the person who largely decides how easy or how difficult to make voting in colorado. he's the person who decided whether and how to count the votes if there are disagreements on whether or how to count the votes in colorado. he is the top elections official in a very, very close swing state. and you should get to know hill. that's

did nothing to change it and he picked paul ryan who agrees with that they support criminalizing women and doctors and supported making abortion at -- even in the case of rape or incest a class -- i think it was a double a felony, meaning a woman or her doctor could spend the rest of their lives in jail. so mitt romney can run for president but he cannot hide from his true feelings. and he said he would be delighted to sign a bill if we sent him such a bill, which we never would as long as i am in the senate overturning roe v. wade. he's going to quote/unquote get rid of planned parenthood which serves three million people in our country. not -- 97% of it is health care, pure and simple preventive health care. breast cancer screenings, cervical screenings. so i'm just saying this man cannot hide from his record. >> when you look at -- you're talking about rick berg who is the north dakota representative running for the senate and berg actually said -- i'm quoting him. he voted to make abortion in case of rape a class a felony including rape or incest. in fact, there are 13 candidates t

's lead -- seven days later, and paul ryan still can't handle the truth. one week after president obama crushed the gop, congressman paul ryan returned to his day job on capitol hill today, carrying his own bags, like much of the republican party, he still seems dazed about the national rejection he took. and in an interview he told a local tv station what it felt like to lose. >> what it had become clear to us as things went on, in avirginia and ohio weren't coming together, that it looked to me some time early in the evening that it just wasn't going to happen. >> and what did that feel like for you? what -- >> it was very disappointing. we had good days, bad days. it was a great experience. i'm very fortunate to have had this experience, but losing never feels good. >> no, losing doesn't feel good. but not learning the lessons of that loss isn't good either. at his core this election was about fairness, giving, everyone a fair shot. congressman ryan doesn't -- he doesn't get it. >> was this a referendum on your budget plan, do you think? >> i don't think we lost it on those budget is

today. it is the same way in football. >> would it have made a difference? >> i thought paul ryan was a big risk as a vp. without he have been more su successful if he had gone for somebody else? >> that is sectiond guessing i don't know. instead of getting 27% of the latino vote, you may have gotten 25 or 40. the facts are we didn't make it. he have a good person, smart guy. who would you like to see in 16 of all of the current candidates? >> i'll tell you, who is the kinder person? jeb bush? >> can i bush do it again? i don't know. >> maybe against a clinton. >> what i want more than anything is to bring this thing together. i want you to ask people about the regulatory wall. if we don't get natural gas and oil out there. we have a chance to make this the american century. if we have are the low cost energy producer in the world. america can have it. i've said before, this is the internet of this century now. it is a huge opportunity. we are in the first inning. >> well, great to talk to you. thank you for coming in. you volunteered yourself good to see you again. when we come b

. you see the pictures of him aalongside his running mate, paul ryan. an opportunity for a photo op. they say he's the one that said as long as we're out there, i insist on going to another place. where else can we go? that's why they'll stop in pennsylvania later today. romney on the ground in ohio having a chance to thank volunteers at a campaign offices, what they call their victory offices in ohio. also having a chance to try to get out some of the vote and motivate some of the people there. we're told, tamron, he made a stop at a local wendy's to say i'm like the rest of you ordering a burger without any cheese. so that's what he's doing. he prepares for the evening. he'll be back here at the campaign headquarters and hopes to give an acceptance speech. he's been practicing for both. writing that speech on his plane on his own ipad hours aago. >> with everything contentious going to wendy's is so risky. so many love mcdonald's. thank you very much. let's go to nbc white house correspondent kristen welker in chicago. that president at that polling place, but his remarks yesterda

ed treatment is right for you. >>> congressman paul ryan is back on capitol hill and talking for the first time about losing his bid for vice presidency. "losing never feels good." >> we were surprised at the outcome. e we knew this was going to be a close race. we thought we had a good chance of winning. it just wasn't enough at the end of the day. i respect the process is done and i congratulate the president on the race. we now have divided government like we did before. the divided government didn't work. we're going to have to make this divided government work. >> and there are new signs that the word compromise may not be such a dirty word in washington. rand paul says he's ready to work with democrats on immigration reform. and a big concession when it comes to taxes. kent conrad says democrats are throwing around mitt romney's idea to raise taxes on the rich by capping deductions. the chairman of the house republican conference says the willingness to all of a sudden work together boils down to timing. according to congressman deb hesterly, compromise works best after

rally tonight. this is paul ryan over here, eastern iowa. joe biden. governor romney, the president, if you put them all on, it starts to look like that, you come back out to the map. what you see here is, much of the country, if you live on the west coast, you live up here in the prairie, you live in texas or across the deep south, you're not getting a campaign. they're not coming to see your state unless they're trying to raise money. or unless you happen to be in a tv market that bumps into one of these other states. this is florida, you see a lot of visits. you break it down by candidate, where is the president, this is the i-4 corridor. this is an area i know ari fleischer is interested in. the democrats will win the southernmost counties, will the jewish votes be less. will the president get less because of the dustup with governor romney and israel in the campaign. you won't see the president out here. this is the most conservative republican part of the state. you see them both competing here in the i-4 corridor, where you find independents. vice president and paul ryan, i'l

. > paul ryan may have lost his bid for vice president but he's not going to fadeaway but he was re-elected to congress. >>> we are raising money for hurricane relief. >>> sandy, all the people devastated on the east coast. the numbers since 6:00 this morning drum roll please, ladies and gentlemen, $50,000! very nice. >> whoo. >> i have fernando greg from the 99 .7 and you want to issue a challenge. >> we want to raise as much money as possible to help out the east coast. we have a challenge for you. >> that's right, roberta said she would give a tour of the cbs studios, we'll give you a behind the scenes experience of fernando and greg, $250 or more donations. >> there you go. call the number, 1-888-5-helps- u. we have traffic and weather coming up right after the break. >>> good morning. we still have a traffic alert in effect in san jose. we're coming out of downtown. northbound 280 approaching wolf road an accident there blocking several lanes and it is stacked up really heavy traffic behind it. in the meantime, toll plaza busy morning here,

we have people like paul ryan giving interviews saying he's showing back up in washington, d.c. pretty much the same way he left? >> well, there is clearly a huge division between the two parties on two questions. whether we should raise revenue/how much revenue we should raise, the white house put out a fairly audacious, if not bold number yesterday of 1.6 trillion and the second question which president didn't quite address on friday which i expect to be asked about today, which involves can that amount be done without reverting back to letting the bush tax cuts for the wealthiest expire? i do want to say one quick thing about general petraeus and the investigation. i think it's a completely phony issue in response to what hogan said about whether the president should have been told earlier. the one thing we learned about all scandals from watergate on, what you don't want is the justice department in a very sensitive investigation back-channeling to the white house and telling them about criminal things, i think, if it had gone the other way, the republicans or other criti

this. my big question, what role does paul ryan play in all of this. he's pretty far out there a national figure, said no new taxes and john boehner will have to try and lead some compromises in his own caucus with a new national leader. >> do you see compromise as possible? because of the fiscal cliff. >> here is the thing. in the olden days when i covered the congress, i used to say, they will end up doing the right thick. i no longer think that. i now believe they could all retreat into their corners, only thing that gives me hope it's in their own self-interest to get this done. >> it's in everyone's self interest. david, as you survey the landscape of the incoming congress, any likelihood that members will be able to come together, work with the president on immigration reform, climate change, tax reform, entitlement reform? >> i do, anderson. i'm increasingly optimistic we won't go over the fiscal cliff. the sharp drop in the markets today send a clear signal to congress and the president that you guys better not let us do this. that you will throw us into a recessi

. nobody picked paul ryan. nobody knew the momentum was going to swing on the first debate. so all we can do is expect the unexpected. i think that stay tuned, it will be very anti-climatic for this to go as planned. >> ben smith, where do you think the real battleground will be? a lot of people are talking about ohio, pennsylvania, florida. the democrats still saying it could not go romney's way, all these things could be pivotal to how the election washes up. where will you be focused tomorrow night? >> look, mitt romney has -- obama has a lot of paths to victory. romney has very few. they will be states like virginia, florida. if obama wins those states, pretty much over. romney needs to run the table and do well in ohio and pennsylvania. those are must-wins for him. >> charles, when you look at both campaigns from start to finish, what do you think has run the better campaign? >> i think that this campaign has been what most campaigns are, a series of ups and downs for both sides, and so there have been some performance issues and the first debate was a performance issue for barack ob

argument in the campaign. mitt romney and paul ryan talked about the fact that this was a choice election and the american people made their choice on this issue and in fact the exit polls, as you know, show that a majority of the american people think we need to take this balanced approach to reducing the deficit because if we don't ask these higher income earners to contribute a little bit more reducing the deficit, everybody else gets whacked that much harder. we have less to invest in education for our kids, seniors on medicare have to pay more and the president has all along said we need to take a balanced approach. >> congressman, everybody's focused on the bush tax cuts. there's the alternative minute tax that will hit some 26 million households and there's -- there are costs to some people from obama care which is now acknowledged, we can say obama care without it being pejorative since the president embraced it during the campaign. there are other taxes that go in, the payroll tax cut from 2011 expires. what happen do you you do about all of that. >> alternative minimum tax there

who ran for vice president, stick still congressman paul ryan. >> congressman paul ryan, is he the leader of the republican party now? >> i wouldn't think so. paul ryan is a policy wonk. >> oh, i wouldn't think so. john boehner laughing in the face of the idea that the leader of the republican party from here on out might be paul ryan. that guy? the republican party picking its new face, its new leader after their electoral disaster. that's going to be an amazing thing to watch. over the next few weeks, months, years. i mean, here's just a case in point. it was an overall electoral disaster for republicans to lose the presidency. it was thought to be impossible for them to lose the presidency. nobody since the great depression has ever been re-elected as president with an unemployment rate like the one we've got now. but barack obama managed to do it. or the republicans managed to blow it depending how you look at it. just take as a case in point. the tremendous republican disaster in the united states senate. i mean, they had a bad night on tuesday night. but in the senate, it

with free birth control obviously. as for paul ryan, he just can't believe urban americans managed to leave their sad, cramped apartments and tenments and made the long trek to the voting booth. >> i think the surprise was some of the turnout. some of the turnout especially in urban areas which definitely gave president obama the big margin to win this race. >> apparently mr. ryan forgot his opponents were giving out free birth control. should have seen that coming. now, some in the gop are trying to escape this whirling vortex of deep denial and blame, especially those looking to run in 2016. louisiana governor bobby jindal was out at a mike within hours. >> i absolutely reject that notion, that description. i think that's absolutely wrong. i don't think that represents where we are as a party and where we're going as a party. >> well, into which dimension the party is headed still remains very much up for question. let's get right to our panel. here in new york joy reid is the managing editor of thegrio.com. msnbc contributor ari melber is a columnist for "the nation." and in washington m

paul ryan is dismissing suggestions that president obama's victory gives his administration a mandate to raise taxes on the rich. returning to capitol hill yesterday for the first time since the election loss, paul ryan pointed to the republicans keeping control of the house as a sign that the country isn't yet sold on the democrats' agenda. >> whether people intended or not we've got divided government. >> you don't think there's a mandate here? >> i don't because then they would have put nancy pelosi in charge of the house of representatives. these idea s we've talked about i think they're popular ideas. this was a close election and unfortunately, divided government didn't work well the last to years. we have to make sure it works the next two years. both parties have to talk to each other. >> reporter: can you see yourself supporting a plan for raising tax rates. >> rhyme not for tax hikes. i do not support raising tax rate, period. i've been saying that my entire career. >> note to house republicans, the p-90 x classes begin again this morning. >>> there is little confidence amon

he's running on adrenaline. paul ryan was running on fumes. the two of them tonight will run apparently on fast food as they made a stop together in ohio a while ago. s.e., apparently the governor picking up a burger with no cheese, a frosty or chili. for a guy who eats exclusively organic, we'll see how that goes. >> what kind of frosty. in intel there? >> reporter: none so far. >> peter, have fun tonight. we're watching right now live footage of mitt romney leaving his plane. we'll keep on that. as for the president, he's camped out in chicago today playing some basketball as he does to clear his mind. he's off the trail today, but he's doing satellite interviews. the president got a little emotional last night in iowa speaking to 20,000 speupportersn his final rally ever as a candidate. >> i'm still fired up, and i've got work to do. that shows you what one voice can do. >> nbc's kristen welker is at obama headquarters in chicago. kristen, what's the mood like there? >> reporter: good afternoon, s.e. there's a lot of excitement and anticipation mixed with some nostalgia. t

be in play with congressman paul ryan on the gop ticket. we'll bring you the president's remarks live from milwaukee as soon as they get things started there. >>> and after weeks of polls that put the race up in the air, there are signs the president is solidifying a top position in the race. take a look at this. two new nbc news "wall street journal" polls, pairist polls shows the president holding on to a six-point lead in ohio. you know the importance of that state by now. and two points ahead of governor romney in florida. but within the margin of error. also, early voting in florida ends today after the number of early voting days in that state is cut by half this year. 25 million people have already voted early in 34 states and washington, d.c. >>> and back to the frenetic pace on the campaign trail. both candidates have already held rallies in new hampshire, iowa, and wisconsin. >> you do want to be able to trust your president. you want to know -- you want to know that -- that your president means what he says and says what he means. after four years of president, you know me. you

covering a paul ryan rally. what do you think is the message for the challengers? >> we're hearing change. change and change. remember four years ago president obama ran on the mantle of hope and change. romney finished up at a rally out in colorado. another one of those eight battleground states we keep talking about. and what mitt romney is saying do you want another four years of under president obama or do you want something a little different? here's part of what he said. >> change can't be measured in speeches. it is measured in achievements. and four years ago, four years ago candidate obama promise dodd so very much, but he's fallen so very short. you recall. he promised he'd be a post-partisan president but he's been most partisan. dividing, attacking, blaming. >> you know, at this late hour here it's all about the ground game. it's about the candidates making sure their supporters actually vote. randi, we heard from both campaigns. the obama campaign telling us they've reached tout 25 million people. the romney campaign saying they've reached out to 50 million people since they

show tied in new hampshire where romney has vacation home, and wisconsin, paul ryan's home state and iowa where president leads by six. democrats warn it's closer than that. in colorado, romney has the edge. 50-47. within the rasmussen margin of error. even the ground game to get out the vote looks like a tossup. the latest pew research study says across the country obama campaign reached 11% of likely voters. only 10% for the romney campaign. look at the swing state. the romney campaign has an edge to reach 14% of likely voters, only 13 from the obama camp. >> bret: carl, thank you. president obama switching things up a bit. for the final push. chief white house correspondent ed henry is with the president in las vegas. >> wardrobe change for president obama. flashing a bomber jacket from air force one to remind even he is still commander-in-chief for now. and while aides are also promising a change in message, with a new more positive tone in his final case -- >> our fight goes on because we know this nation cannot succeed. without a growing, thying middle class. >> he is still

't win the presidency that way. >> to that point, in terms of the great wall of -- paul ryan did nearly 125 interviews with local television affiliates but no local tv since october 8 when this interview in michigan ended abruptly. >> the best thing to help prevent violent crime in inner cities is to bring jobs there, teach people good character and discipline. that's what churches do and -- >> and you do all that by cutting taxes? >> those are yours, not mine. >> thank you very much, sir. >> that was kind of strange. puts words into people's mouth? >> unmiked and that was the last we heard from paul ryan. and mitt romney hasn't done an interview in 23, 24 days. is that usual for someone running for the highest office in the land? >> no. the reason they're doing that is because they get tough questions and they don't want to answer tough questions. ryan can't because he's a true right wing conservative and the president and his people are trying to position romney differently and ryan is not going to do that. ryan's view on abortion is the same as richard murdoch and todd akin. they co-

're organized and they have intensity and a favorite son paul ryan. if obama doesn't win any of the states you can do it one way. pennsylvania. why? because it's virgin country. no anti-romney ads laid down like in ohio. romney is courting $10 million, in the last week to $3 million for the democra democrats. he needs one electoral vote. half of the state is the congressional district, new hampshire or colorado or anything. so i think he has a path to any one of those three would work. >> charles, we talk about it on the panel of what they're running on, both candidates. what about president obama's closing argument? >> i don't think he has got one. the same as the old argument. the argument is romney is bad guy. trust me. i don't think that sells. what you've got is obama having a bit of a surge last week when the race was frozen, the national polls. obama was behind by five. obama rallied. looking at the polls yesterday and today, romney is back ahead one or two in the national. that could sway over the battleground state. >> see you tomorrow. thank you. >> pleasure. current and former intel

and paul ryan had won, they'd say they have a mandate r for imposing the ryan romney budget. the president talked about this issue. he says we need to ask higher income individuals to pay more to generate revenue, as part of the solution. part of the solution along with cuts, to reducing the deficit, so it's not as if this hasn't been an important part of the campaign argument. so we'll have to see how this goes. >> i'll look forward the to talking to you more about it. you know what investors are telling me, you got to go about four times bigger. >> i think the framework of the bipartisan commission is right and it would be great if our republican colleagues would adopt that. people like grover norquist have said that's just a subterfuge to raise taxes on the american people when in fact, it's a balanced approach to getting the job done. >> still to come, the keys to victory. how the president won and the voters who turned against the republican party. tonight, there are warning signs for both sides. john king at the magic wall. the man does not sleep. he is back. plus, after last night,

the solution is get rid of paul ryan. >> the republican party has to rethink strategy. in hind sight, marco rubio would have been the best choice to run with mitt romney. it's not a knock on paul ryan. he did very well. it's just that the gop needs to send a powerful signal to hispanic voters that the party respects them. >> he thinks it's about signals. he think it's about having a spanish name on the ballot. you don't have to do anything on policy. >> and you don't have to do anything on tone. i think mark got to a really good point. you have this phenomenon happen in the conservative movement where their media culture has taken over their political culture. the left has a media culture too but it doesn't instruct the party how to behave. but people like bill o'reilly and rush limbaugh, they set the tone and the tea party enforces that within the political space. they expect and demand even marco rubio had to be against the dream act. he had to use term like illegals. you have to get up to the edge of top radio speak in order to fit in. just having somebody with an "o" at the end of their

obama to congratulate him. >> i just spoke with governor romney, and i congratulated him and paul ryan on a hard-fought campaign. >> with the 2012 campaign barely in the rear view mirror, we're already talking about the next president in the white house. does the popular gop senator in florida have designs on running for the next republican nomination. a source close says that's way too premature. but it's always good to have friends in iowa. rubio's just one name in a large list of republicans who may consider runs for the white house. they include governor chris christie of new jersey, body mcdonald of virginia, bobby jindal of louisiana and scott walker of wisconsin. senators rand paul of kentucky and john thune of south dakota, former governor jeb bush of florida, former senator rick santorum. former governor mike huckabee who ran for president four years ago and the past two republican running mates, congressman paul ryan and former alaska governor sarah palin. as for the democrats the vice president keeps dropping hints of running again for president. here's joe biden from electi

saying people like congressman paul ryan who has been a deficit hawk and campaigned on being a deficit hawk on the romney/ryan taicket do you think he would derail a grand bargain to have a platform to run on? >> what i would say, you have a lot of folks in the gop, at the presidential 2016 level, their political identity has been formed around their argument that we need to bring this deficit down quickly. if we get a deficit grand bargain into place, note that paul ryan voted against simpson/bowsimpson simpson/bowles, if we get that in place, suddenly that argument is off the table. so, it's not going to be all that easy for some of these people to say, okay, we're finished here. i think it's a mistake to accuse politicians of having too much cynicism. lot of people painted themselves into a corner, an identity of being very, very pure conservative deficit hawks. it's going to be hard for them to let that go. >> speaker boehner said over the weekend, he doesn't want to box himself in, do you feel confident that he's going to come to the table and he'll be workable on a situation? >>

blustering. mitt romney and paul ryan talking about how to pay for their plan but not a single deduction or exclusion they would change in order to pay for it. so from the white house's perspective the way to do this, the right sequencing is let the bush tax cuts expire, pocket the money. do tax reform over the next y r year. if you come up with a plan, if you can get that plan ratified, raising the same amount of money and it's reasonable, we can talk about it. we can do it through tax reform. first the money, you make sure it's real and you lock it in. >> is that the whole reason why this negates a conversation about tax later even though mitch mcconnell has taken to the microphones to acknowledge the money is on the table? >> right. so for them the idea that revenue is on the table is, for the republicans, revenue is on the table means tax reform. they want to do it and the democrats don't buy that revenue is truly on the table. they don't buy when republicans say revenue is on the table and democrats say revenue is on the table that both sides are talking about the same thing. let m

romney, president obama, arnold schwarzenegger, bill clinton and paul ryan. >> bret: as we have been telling you, ohio is basically the epicenter of the presidential universe right now. no republican has ever won the white house without it. it's shaping up to possibly be the decideer this time. tonight, correspondent mike tobin takes us to a ohio school where the campaign is already over. and the winner declared. >> republicans and democrats both love america. >> as the world wants to know how ohio will vote, students at saint edward middle school lakewood took a shot. >> ohio was a question mark. i don't know if you remember that. >> through the mock election they picked president barack obama back in 2008, by eight points. again this year the exercise and practical prophecy is an attempt by the faculty to start the students down a path of engagement with the political process. it's met with as much enthusiasm as homecoming. >> this is are a responsibility as an american to make this decision. you know, i really sat down and i paid attention to the debates and i listened to what eve

as well have talked to coworkers and tried to convince people to vote for paul ryan and me. we have one job left and that's to make sure on election day we get, make certain that everybody who's qualified to vote gets out to vote. we need every single vote in florida. [cheering]. now what makes this rally and your work so inspiring is that you are here because you care about america. this is, this is a campaign about america and about the future we're going to leave our children. we thank you. we ask you to stay at it, all the way, all the way to victory on tuesday night. [cheers and applause] tomorrow we begin a new tomorrow. tomorrow we begin a better tomorrow. this nation is going to begin to change for the better tomorrow. your work is making a difference. the people of the world are watching. the people of america are watching. we can begin a better tomorrow's weather today and with the help of the people in florida that's exactly what's going to happen. [cheers and applause] now there may be some of your friends and family members who haven't made up their mind yet who they are go

started. >> mitt romney will also visit iowa and colorado today, running mate paul ryan already wrapped up an event today in ohio. he now heads to pennsylvania, virginia and florida. we have two new nbc wall street marist polls out for you. president obama holds a 6-point lead among likely voters in ohio. 51 to 45%. then in the sunshine state the president gets support of 49% from likely voters. mitt romney coming in with 47%. let's head to mentor, ohio where the president is holding a campaign stop. we're following very closely with nbc's chris janzen's help. chris a good day to you. let's get to what the president is saying in his final pitch to the ohio voters. why is he there in mentor, specifically? >> reporter: good afternoon, alex. there is one group, one reason why the president is here. he's white work class voters. it's a group where the president has been behind nationally, having a tough time getting to 40%. but it's closette here closest . five points separated him and mitt romney in working class voters. take a look at the statistics in mentor. i know this very well. i grew u

september after a hard-fought election. paul ryan is now speaking out for the first time. he says he is ready to reach across the aisle. >> it's part of my job to be a part of the solution to try to make this divided government work because the issues we talked about seven days ago are still the issues we have to deal with today, the economy, a debt crisis. we have got a health care system problem. i worry about our military. these same problems exist and we'll have to find a way of finding common ground to make them work. martha: paul ryan who hoped to be vice president of the united states come january, now finds himself in his congressional seat still in wisconsin and says he has got his work cut out for him. stuart varney joins me. host of the "varney & company" on the fox business network. stuart, your thoughts, first of all on what ryan had to say there? >> can i drag this back to what you called, martha, a dire warning and it is a dire warning and that was talked about by paul ryan right there. the dire warning is from moody's. they rate our debt. they say whether this debt is

of the swing states. if you lived in colorado, oh, boy, you saw a lot of the candidates. paul ryan spent a lot of time in colorado. if you live in florida, you saw a lot of these candidates. you heard a lot of them on the airwaves and saw them in person, especially mitt romney and the president himself and now let's look at ohio because this, of course, is the big battleground. you can see just how much time they spent in ohio. i want to show you three parts in particular, suburbs of cleveland, columbus and cincinnati. a lot of attention on these spots. let's go in here to lake county. lake county. 2% of the population, the president personally spending time here. why? in 2004, this went to bush. this is territory the president got and he's trying to hold on to. 2008, the president had a slim margin here in lake county. he's definitely trying to hold on to that. columbus, both candidates interested in keeping ahold of this territory. it's 9% of the population. and you come down here to hamilton county, 7%, both candidates spending a lot of time around cincinnati. again, back in 2004, this was

: a small lining for congressman paul ryan. governor romney's running-mate easily winning his election. a seat he has held since 1998. still seen as a rising star within the republican party. already some speculation out there. the talk will begin as early as this morning about 2016 and who the main players are for that. here is a look at four of them on the ticket last night. bill: the president still is the president. the house, though, will be controlled by republicans and the senate controlled by democrats. charles krauthammer late last night does not expect there to be much giver on either side. he won by going very small, very negative and we are left as a country exactly where we started but a little bit worse off. what will he do? he will go back to who he is. people have said he should be a clinton and compromise on a successful second term. he's a man of the left. he will try to push his agenda through with what he thinks is a mandate. bill: he's not instinctively a moderate. ed rollins, fox news contributor. you say that typically in politics you go through cycles and you ha

thanking his family and paul ryan. he said he gave it his all and believes in the american people. martha: election day 2012 is now in the history books. but in the battleground state of florida the race is not over. the president with 50%, governor romney with 49%. phil keating joins us live in tampa. how many votes do they believe remain to be counted in florida? >> reporter: 10s of thousands of ballots are just now beginning to be processed in six florida counties. these are absentee ballots that arrived by 7:00 p.m. last night. but as it stands right now. aside from all those people you saw waiting in super long lines at miami-dade county it was 1:00 in the morning where one woman finally made her vote count. president obama over governor romney has 46,000 vote lead out of 8.3 million ballots cast. with these absentee balance on the it seems improbable governor romney could win all of them and make up that difference. martha: as we were reporting all year florida would come down to the i4 vote and the voters there defied the polls. >> reporter: a poll came out last week showing romney

everywhere they can throughout the state. paul ryan had a bus tour throughout ohio last weekend, about eight stops and he was campaigning through the center of ohio to touch as many people in the suburbs he possibly could. >> gretchen: i feel like i know ohio, well, having worked in cincinnati, cleveland and my husband is from columbus. >> oh, wow. >> gretchen: good to see you, erin. one station handed out free gas during the middle of the gas shortage, wait until you hear how this ends, unfortunately it wasn't pretty. we go up close with some of the neighbors hardest hit by hurricane sandy. . >> i'm jamie colby in breezy point, new york when a congressman becomes a constituent and loses had all. and are they getting it all new york congressman bob turner in his own words coming up. and a trip to the one place with the new ideas that help us pull it all together. from the things that hang and shine... ...to the things that sparkle and jingle. all while saving the things that go in our wallet. more saving. more doing. that's the power of the home depot. trade in any light string and get up to
